Common questions
Which cars qualify for the car loan interest deduction?
New cars, SUVs, pickups, vans, minivans and motorcycles with final assembly in the United States and a gross vehicle weight rating under 14,000 lb. The loan must be taken out after December 31, 2024, be secured by the vehicle, and be for a vehicle you expected to use mainly for personal purposes. For 2026, 78 models reported to NHTSA are built only in the USA and 17 more are built in the USA and other countries.
Do foreign brands qualify?
Yes, if the vehicle was assembled in the US. The brand's home country doesn't matter. Toyota, Honda, BMW, Hyundai and Kia all build 2026 models in US plants.
Do used cars or leased cars qualify?
No. The vehicle's original use has to start with you, so used vehicles and lease buyouts don't qualify, and lease payments aren't loan interest.
Does it matter how much of the car is American-made?
No. Only the final assembly location counts. A car with mostly imported parts that is assembled in Kentucky qualifies; one with mostly US parts that is assembled in Ontario doesn't.
How much can I deduct?
Up to $10,000 of interest a year for tax years 2025 to 2028, whether or not you itemize. The deduction falls by $200 for every $1,000 of modified adjusted gross income above $100,000 ($200,000 on a joint return).

Covers models whose manufacturers have filed an American Automobile Labeling Act report with NHTSA (latest listing dated June 8, 2026). Heavier pickups and vans (over 8,500 lb) aren't in these reports, and some models are filed later in the year. The VIN checker works for every vehicle.
